Hey guys We've been guessing a lot in German sim about realistic western horse suitability. I've only worked with reining, trail and pleasure horses in real life so far and I don't really have a clue about what's important for a horse that competes in working cowhorse or cutting or reined cowhorse. So can anyone tell me what's the difference between those three classes? That would help us a lot

Working Cow Horse is what they call fence work in the National Reined Cow Horse Association (NRCHA). The AQHA sometimes combines other events in their Working Cow Horse classes, to make them somewhat like a full-fledged Reined Cow Horse event but they're just confusing, lol. Basically Reined Cow Horse has three divisions: Rein Work (Reining), Herd Work (Cutting) and Fence Work (Working Cow Horse). Here is a video of what Working Cow Horse (Fence Work in Reined Cow Horse) does. This is the high score Fence Work from the 2010 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity in Reno, Nev. I was there actually, didn't see this run but did see Lil Remedy Pep in the finals. www.youtube.com/watch?v=2mCDMRExazMIf you see the orange stripes on the wall of the arena, the horse and rider have to kind of cut the cow within those stripes for a portion then they run the cow down the fence and roll back into it to change directions then have to show the horses ability to "steer" the cow by doing figure-eights in the arena. I have a better explanation somewhere else, I'll have to find it for you. I'm somewhat rushed right now. lol.

I should note that some people call it Cow Work rather than Fence Work as you can see from Nessa's latter quoted email but they are the same thing.
So, in Reined Cow Horse: Reining = Rein Work Cutting = Herd Work Working Cow Horse = Fence Work or Cow Work
Horses are scored on those three events then those scores are added together to get the final placings.
Basically, think of it as being scored similar to Eventing, which includes Dressage, Cross Country and Show Jumping.
