Okay ladies... Caughey is getting TOO big to manage on an individual horse's basis with html. I'm in need of some serious updating. That being said, I have played with PHP from someone else's script, but I didn't have to set up any of the back end stuff. 2 things I'm interested in right now... I need to set up all my horses in a file... I believe excel will work just fine. Have you ladies done this through Google docs? I believe you can export an excel Google doc and have it import correctly into a regular excel program. Has anyone tried? For those of you with multiple breeds, do you set all your horses up on one big excel doc, or do you have multiple sheets? Next. I guess I need to focus on one thing at a time.. getting horses moved onto one document. But after i do that... I will obviously need to find a server or host that allows php and mysql (i think that's what i'll need).. I know there are some ladies who will host sim players, so that's not a real concern... I believe i can download a test enviroment and play wiht it there before uploading it... any suggestions as to WHERE to download this, and how easy is it to set up? I definitely feel in over my head, php just makes my head swim.

www.wampserver.com/en/ - this is what I used when I first played around with it, it was suggested to me by Shahla and a few others. I don't use Excel at all when doing my PHP stuff. You can make a table of your horses, and upload it to your server. And yes, you should be able to use Google Docs to make the spreadsheet and then export it. I do everything through PHP scripts and it's suited me very well. I think it's actually helped me learn a lot more than I would if I were using PHPMyAdmin. I create tables, alter them, input information, update it, everything through PHP. If you have the capability to use PHP and MySQL on your server, I can at least set you up with a horse table and an offspring table. Plus I can see if I can get a results table in there for you (which is a DREAM).

ash, by table you just mean a <table><tr> <td></td></tr></table> type of table right? If you'd be willing to help me with setting up those types of tables that would be AWESOME! i need to set up wamp tho first.

Nope, not those types of tables. Sorry, I thought you already knew the basic concept of PHP and MySQL and didn't think to explain. In a MySQL database you have tables. I have one database and several tables in it. One that stores all of my horse's information, one that stores all of the offspring sired by/out of my horses, one that stores all of the shows my horses have ever entered and one that stores individual results. The shows table and the results table work together to pull out results for each horse and calculate points for me. In each table you have columns. Just like you would in an Excel spreadsheet. In a table for your horses you would have all of the basic fields for stats - name, breed, color, age, gender, etc etc including the horse's whole pedigree. When you input each horse (which I use a PHP form to do) it becomes a new row in the table and is given an ID. The ID is what you would use if you want to pull up the horse's page. You only have one horse page set up, (mine is horse.php) but it uses the ID specified in the URL to pull that horse's individual information out. So .... take this page for example: www.simdirectory.com/ashlee/fiesta/horse.php?id=213The ID# is specified as being "213". Punch that into your browser and go to the page. It will go to the stallion All Flint's page. Now take out the 3 to make the ID# 21. Now you go to the page of the mare Bueno Lea. Change the ID# and you'll realize that it's the same file, but depending upon the ID specified, it pulls up the information of the horses with that ID# in my horse table. That means I do not have individual pages for every single horse. Just one page and PHP does the rest of the work for me, through pulling the info from my database. This is a rough explanation of how information stored in a database and how you can use PHP to pull up the information. If I ever want to update something, I have a list of my horses and I just go to my handy "Update" page that I have set up and change whatever I need to change.

hm... Well, I thought I had a basic handle of the concept.. but apparently I don't, not at all. When you're not busy or in the middle of a project, would you be able to sign onto AIM maybe? I'm more confused than when I started. lol!

PHP/MySql can be overwhelming at first but once you get the hang of it the possibilities are endless. If you need someone to host your - I would be happy too (you get your own CPanel and everything ) ! Also, if you have PHP/MySql questions - I'm on AIM and would be happy to help!
