I hate doing my records and I was about to work on them when I came to this thought.
Do the points matter or not? If a horse has a long show record, and clearly has done well. Does it matter if the owner has listed the points/winnings or not?
I'm thinking I might not list the points, I don't apply for titles anyways.

In my opinion it's all up to the owner of the horse. Do I like to see horses that have earned titles? Yes, but not seeing any titles doesn't deter me from looking at prospective breedings or sales.
That's just my opinion

I love points! While it doesn't deter me from breeding to someone's horse... it might be annoying if I wanted to BUY the horse, because I would have to figure out the points after, and add them all up. ;/

Well If I were to sell the horse I would add the point up myself before I placed them myself.
I'm worried about if it deters people from breeding to my stallions, or buying foals from my foal crops.

I love seeing points and titles on horses I'm considering breeding to and/or looking to purchase. I always check them out because it helps me gauge where the horse is at in it's show career. I like seeing show records, but I think points really help you compare the experience level between horses. I've seen horses with large records, but only a couple hundred points because they always did poorly in shows. If I saw a horse with a smaller record, but more points I might consider breeding to it over the other horse.

Thanks Ash! lol
I just need a faster way to do my records and if I didn't have to keep checking on what the points/winnings are, then trying to add them it would go SOOOO much faster. + I could always go back and add them later

Why not just grab a pad of paper and write them down and add them all up when you're done collecting results? That's what I always did before I had the script that adds them for me.

Thats what I have been doing. It makes my head hurt. I also don't do just one horse at a time. I do one show at a time.

So do all the shows you have to collect at once and then add up points when you're done. That's what I'd do. I believe Kalla collects by shows, she may have some tips to help you make your collecting more efficient.
I quit using the note pad after awhile, because I have the points and earnings systems of all the associations I show with memorized lol.

I keep track of my points, though it's a pain sometimes. I prefer my titles - I think it says more about what a horse has done in its life and how well it did. Also when I buy/adopt a horse where the information isn't clear, it lets me know what to continue showing the horse in. I do love it when my horses make it to the top status, like Hall of Fame or Legion of Masters. I also think it says a lot to a prospective breeder/buyer as well.
Another option is just to keep track of association points, if you show pretty much just in an association. That's what one of our members in HF does.

The points is what gets me. It is what takes me so long and I HATE having to do record. If I could just added the shows and placement it would go so much faster ...

I like seeing points on my own horses just because it lets me gauge how well they've been doing since the last time i collected results. I love seeing the points on other's horses b/c it lets me gauge, like ash said, how good of a show horse they are. If Horse A has 20 shows and 100pts, and Horse b has 50 shows and 100 points, i'm going to probably breed to horse A because it's doing much better than horse B.

I collect show-by-show, for one club or board at a time. I do it all by hand, I add everything by hand, I update EACH horse's page by hand. It doesn't take long if I am not behind. I do it about three times a month, but sometimes only once a month.
For example, I show my horses in the AHAC, the ASSHA, the RCHA, the ASWCHA, the ASQHR, the ASApHC, the ASPRA, and have like 3 in the ASPR. I have one horse who shows in the Dressage/Fresian/Draft clubs (he is easy to collect for, haha).
This is my system:
So I open the "show results board" for the ASQHR, for example, in my web browser. I open the WORD document on my computer called "ASQHR_Results". It has ALL my QHs who compete, listed in alphabetical order. At the top of the WORD doc are the points & money for the club (no need to memorize because I can refer to that each time - although I do have 'em all memorized by now). I use the CNTL+F feature on the web browser and search for my barn name in the results. It highlights ALL my horses that placed in the show.
I find the first horse in the results, and set up the "Top Ten" line (typed-out sentence) in the WORD doc. This means I find the orse's name on the WORD doc and type out: Top Ten: Futurity Reining Class @ ASQHR Edmonton Classic 2011 (10 pts + $1,000) Then I copy that line. I paste it under all the other horse's names, who won the same class (if any). I move on to the Junior horses. I change the "futurity" part to say "Junior" instead, and do the same copy/paste for all the winners of that class. etc. etc. until I have finished the show. I do all the shows like this, until I am caught up on ASQHR results. I save the WORD doc alot as I go so I don't lose all my hard work.
THEN I open up the horse folder (HTML files) and open the first horse's HTML page. I copy the new show results onto their page. I add up the new points they won for the ASQHR, and the new money. I add it to the old points & money already on their page. I use the little default computer calculator to do this because it's faster than my own brain. If the horse has reached a new level of title, I open the "Titled Horses" thread and post it, or update the database, or update the thread, or whatever. (You could also jot down notes on a piece of paper about new titles, rather, I have done that before too) I save the horse's HTML page file. I do the next horse the same way.
I do the same for each club, depending when show results are posted. I usually do this on weekends, but sometimes I collect a little bit by bit all week and then by the time the weekend comes around, I am ready to upload to the website.
Once ALL horses have been updated in this fashion, I upload them all at once in one fell swoop with my FTP program.
It sounds like alot, but it doesn't take me very long and I am so expert by now that it's really not a big deal. I have complete control over every part of the system; any mistakes are human error, and because I have done it (almost) this exact way for 15 years, it's not difficult anymore.
You might be able to take some hints from my system and come up with a system that will work for you?
Note, sometimes I use notepad rather than WORD (usually for AHAC entries, especially lately when my show string has changed alot, with breeding/selling/acquiring new horses). I always keep 'em alphabetized because then it's easier to find them as you are copying/pasting new results lines (sentences).
Some times I have sorted them by Ft/Junior/Advanced/Sr, but usually just by name.
That's all I can think of. LOL Good luck! Everyone figures out a system that works best for them, you don't HAVE to do it the way someone else does, by any means.

Thank you Kalla and everyone else.
Right now I think I'm not going to do points. I'm not really opening my stud up for the public, sells horses will have their points done before I offer them up.
