A huge surprise came from Windy Lane Farm today with the announcement of the retirement of ten year old stallion, Heathers Boy. The stallion successfully went eight for eight in the Allsim Steeplechase Association and earning nearly $500,000. The bay son of Buckleys Boy, Heathers Boy was a major contender in some of the biggest races for the 2009 season. He won three GI races and one GI-N race and came out on top in all races. Outside of the ASA, Heathers Boy lost only two races (in which he finished second) in thirteen starts. He received two Reserve Champion of Race awards, among other accomplishments.
His Lifetime Record comes out to: 21 starts, 19 wins and 2 places with $1,277,000 in lifetime earnings. Heathers Boy will be joining the Windy Lane stallion barn after winning an ASA offseason hurdle race in a field of fifteen.
"We knew about midway through this year's season that Heathers Boy would be retiring at the end of the season," Shelly Bearly, owner and trainer of the steeplechaser, said. "His last start was the end and we knew it; we wanted him to go out on a good note, which is why we ran him in the open hurdle race."
Heathers Boy is not the only steeplechaser to retire; twelve year old mare Spend A Quest, a grey daughter of Norquest, will be retiring to the small broodmare band at Windy Lane.
"We feel that Windy Lane is just... overlooked in general by the sheer size of Iron Gate," Bearly said. "We have a lot of horses joining us, who should be active by Christmas." She is, of course, referring to names such as Cats Charm, Pas Retors, Eye of the Storm, Casanova, and Crash Course.
