Mine That Bird
In 2009, Mine That Bird was not only the longshot upset, at 50 to 1, but in a magnificent ride jockey Calvin Borel brought the trailing horse from 20th to 1st to capture the roses. In fact, Mine That Bird's story is so good, he's getting his own movie, joining the likes of Ruffian, Barbaro, Secretariat, and Seabiscuit in starring in a movie.
Giacomo
In 2005, the 50 to 1 longshot Giacomo and 71-1 longshot Closing Argument raced to the wire over the second choice, the four to one Afleet Alex. Giacomo was the second largest shock in the 131 year history of the Kentucky Derby.
Volponi
At 40 to 1, Volponi took the 2002 Breeders' Cup Classic by six lengths over a field that included War Emblem and the 5 - 2 favorite Medaglia d'Oro (sire of Rachel Alexandria), pulling away easily to secure his victory.
Sarava
Prior to Volponi's upset in the Classic, Sarava became the biggest longshot to win the Belmont Stakes. At 70 to 1 Sarava dueled with the Kentucky Derby/Preakness Stakes winner War Emblem to win by nearly a length. Included in the field was Medagila d'Oro, who would later finish second to Volponi.
Birdstone
He was the 36-1 long shot, nicknamed "Little Man" around the barn, but in the stretch in Belmont, Birdstone became yet another horse to steal away the glory of the Crown. Against the Kentucky Derby/Preakness Stakes favorite, Smarty Jones, Birdstone sailed home to a one length victory. Smarty Jones was the most heavy betted favorite since 1979, when Spectacular Bid was denied.
Blame The Upset Award[/u]
Blame The Upset Award is a new addition to the Eclipse Awards in which the horse that caused a shock in horse racing is awarded.
Note: This is a fictional award (for those that don't follow horse racing) and this is all for a school speech I'm preparing. Although this is awarded annually, the candidates are from 2000 to 2011.
That's not my total intro, I'll have more and of course I'll be introducing who Blame and Upset are/were. Just vote, please and huge thanks in advance.
