I wonder if you're going to get at least one brindle out of the Mac breedings...he's not 100%, but he's definitely more than 50/50. I'm always interested in the results, lol. Maybe, I dunno yet. I want to be realistic and chimerism in horses isn't really an inheritable trait, so we'll see how generous I'm feeling lol. Most people don't really realize that Brindle in horses isn't inheritable like it is in dogs. It's actually caused by a mare that has developing twins and then one absorbs the other. The striping is caused by two different coat patterns being "fused" together, and the horse will have two different DNA sequences, because it is essentially two "different" horses in one. Creepy, eh? Kind of like siamese twins in humans. From what I understand there are horses that can throw Brindle 50% of the time, but it's not because of the actual coat color, but instead because the line is prolific for twins. I think I'll have fun and randomize the Brindle possibility when I do stats. I'll get the pages to you tomorrow!

Ashlee - brindling can be be inherited. It's thought to be associated with the Sooty gene, and it has to have it on both sides of the family tree and the right color combination to show up, but it can be inherited. Most chimeras are brindles, but not all brindles are chimeras. But it's still extremely rare. Even foals that I've bred from Mac haven't been all been brindles. Lin - that's okay! LOL I know what you mean. Indiza - thank you for the pages! Those are lovely mares, and I'm looking forward to seeing their foals. And no problem, I'm glad that so many people were so happy to get breedings to them! That is very flattering.

I think you misunderstood what I said, or I worded it wrong. It can only be inherited if the line is known for twinning, and is not inherited the same way that color genetics are inherited.
However, I've never heard that it's associated with Sooty. But I could be incorrect. The way I'm thinking is, why would it be associated with any color gene if it's caused by twinning?
I dunno, I'm going to have to talk to my color experts about this one lol. Just realize that a lot of the "explanations" that people put out there (especially those that own real Brindles) is incorrect, and not backed by anything scientific. These people are just trying to beef up their horse's popularity (and stud book!).
I'll get back to you on that one though, once I ask about the Brindle + Sooty thing.

Lol okay, this is what I got from Ammit about it:
From what she's said, I have even been corrected on a few things that I used to believe went into the way Brindle worked. Hrm.
Ahhh the joys of genetics.

LOL no worries Ashlee! Plus it's just really hard to have a concrete statement on a color that no one is really sure yet how it works. I'm sorry...I didn't mean that you have to have sooty on both sides, I meant it's thought that you need both whatever is causing the brindling to be on both sides. But who knows! ;D I'm certainly no expert. I'm just good at regurgitating what other people have researched, lol.

They are gorgeous! I love the pictures you used (and of course I'm partial to Khemosabi so I think she's BEAUTIFUL!), and Khalligraphy is quadruple Khemo! Those are some long legs on Flambe! Congrats, and good luck with them!

Ashlee - thank you! They are all so nice, and you ended up with a brindle! That's great! Also, I'm jealous of your awesome site. Lin - He's beautiful! Thank you for the page. Also, Topside has a full pedigree on his page, though you probably just haven't gotten there yet for Top Of The Pop's pedigree. You're very welcome, both of you! I should be the one thanking you guys, I really love seeing so many people happy with offspring of my horses. ;D

Yup lol. I gave him a 40% chance of giving a Brindle, and I ended up with one.
And thank you! Lol. The basic layout I didn't do (main and header/footer graphics), but all of the content and formatting I did myself. Not to mention all that icky PHP stuff lmao.
